TWENTY-TWO

The school parking lot was filled as Sam maneuvered the Nissan past a line of parked cars.

Parents of all shapes and sizes, and from all walks of life, were getting out of their vehicles and heading to the school’s front entrance.

Sam hoped she could find a spot, even if it was in the back.

There were none.

She cursed. It did not help that she was late.

She had been so wrapped up in the case that she did not pay attention to the time and only realized what time it was when Bashir pointed it out.

She had been looking forward to this night, but rumors had intensified that Henkson now had a suspect, and it was only a matter of days before he made the arrest.

Sam, on the other hand, was nowhere near making any arrests or even having any suspects to begin with.

A part of her was starting to accept the fact that Glen Henkson, the chauvinistic jerk that he was, would be the next sergeant, and ultimately her boss. But another part of her felt like she had failed not only herself but also Bashir and her colleagues.

Henkson would change the department’s dynamic. For better or worse, he would shake things up. Most, if not all, of the department’s members would not appreciate this, and they would blame Sam.

Henkson had stepped on too many toes. He had betrayed other officers and detectives to be in the position he was in now.

For him to be in charge of the very people whose heads he had gone over would be an insult.

They would feel that she had let them down.

Sure, there were still those who did not want to take orders from a woman, but their dislike for Henkson outweighed that.

There was no doubting that Henkson was a good detective, but whether or not he was leadership material was another matter. Henkson held grudges, and those grudges would come forward if he became their boss.

This would fuel resentment toward her. She, and not they, had been given the opportunity. And she would have lost that opportunity to Glen Henkson.

They would not understand that Henkson had an easier case compared to hers, giving him a lopsided advantage.

A Chevy Equinox pulled out and Sam quickly parked in the spot it had vacated.

She hurriedly got out and rushed to the front entrance.

As she made her way down the hall, she stopped. Framed photos of students covered one wall. One photo caught her attention. The boy had a white smile and a twinkle in his eyes.

He reminded her of Andrew Langally.

She felt her energy drain.

It was not important that she had failed so many in the department. The only thing that mattered was that she had failed Andrew.
